On The Dalai Lama and Religion

On The Dalai Lama and Religion

The Brazilian Theologist, Leonardo Boff, once asked the Dalai Lama the following question:

"Your Holiness.  What is the best religion?"

Boff thought the Dalai Lama would defend oriental religions as the best, but instead, His Holiness responded as follows:

"The best religion is the one that gets you closer to God.  It is the one that makes you a better person."

How wise the Dalai Lama is.  His statement tells of a God that is powerful enough to speak to all faiths, all religions, all cultures and all beliefs.  I believe that what the Dalai Lama was saying implies that there is no one "right" religion.  If your religion leads you to become a good and compassionate person who can see the bigger story, then that is the right religion for you.

This may be a very challenging to some who think there is only one "right" way.  I can understand that.  Being raised as a Catholic, I was taught that you were either "Catholic" or "Public."  This, of course meant, that you either went to a Catholic school and thus were saved, or you went to a public school and were not saved.  Fortunately, I was graced to overcome this rigid and Non Christian attitude.

Let us know what you think.  This is an important and meaningful topic considering the hatred that is so predominant in our world today.

Be blessed,
Rev. Barbara

I would totally agree there is not any right religion.Every religion has something different to say about Gods word and will use it to there advantage and most likely what they say about it is always wrong, not always but most of the time. Some say you cannot ever give up your salvation, right or wrong.Well let me ask this,in James ch 5 vs 19 and 20,can a person wonder away from something they do not have?I would think not. What about the book of Luke,Judas was one of the twelve ch 22 he even gave Jesus a kiss was he ever saved yes he was Gods word tells us this, but is he in heaven i would think not,so can a person be saved and go to hell?YES.Here is the point, its not about religion which so many try to make you think it is,its about a one on one personal relationship with Jesus Christ ans having his Holy Spirit come to live inside of you and to control your life at your own will and i hope the will of God for many.I personally do not care much for any religion.

Whatever get you to God is the right way. I work in an institution where many young men convert to Islam while incarcerated. I tell them, if it helps them to find God, to be open to God, to find a dialog with God, then it is a good thing.

I saw a lot of version on this video on the youtube about a dialogue between The Dalai Lama and Dr Leonardo Boff on The Best religion.

Can anyone confirm if this interview actually happened? So many emails have been circulated with his Holiness name and how can we know which one is true and which one is not.

I understand that it is about the finger pointing at the moon, but some would still like to clarify before they circulate this content further.

I think we can't see the forest for the trees. Which "form of worship" we adopt is in no way as important as which "God" we serve. Jehovah is the God of the Bible, He declares that Jesus is His Son and our only bridge to Him. And His FIRST commandment to us was to have NO other gods before us...to worship Him ALONE! Which God (or gods) do other religions worship? Some have hundreds (if not thousands) of gods. Some have none. It cannot be a "generic" God...for there is no such thing!

      Hi Judy,

Thanks for your comments and your opinion.  I believe that open and honest discussion is important to an understanding of all of the world's great religions, of which Christianity is one.   Each religion believes that its dogma, commandments and sacred texts teach great truths.   The goal here, I believe, is not to focus on the differences, but to focus instead on the common bonds and threads of love that can be found within each so that we may come to a place of peace and tolerance.   I believe this was the primary message given to us by Our Lord.

When asked what the greatest commandment was, Jesus responded as follows:

1  You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.
2  Love your neighbor as yourself.

For me, I do not believe I can do one without the other.

      Be blessed!

Mother Teresa believed that, no matter what your religion is, you should live it, follow it, practice it to the best of your ability. This holy Roman Catholic realized that there are many paths to God and that many are doing their best. I agree with this more liberal approach to salvation.

      Hi Jazzmin,

Let me say that those who attend your Sunday school lessons are indeed lucky to have you as their teacher.  What better way can we celebrate God than to teach tolerance and acceptance of all of our brothers and sisters.  We are all created in the same image.  Yes, we may disagree, and yes their is hatred in the world.  But, contributing to it by judging others for their belief system only contributes to that hatred.

When I was a young girl in catechism school, I was taught what I believe is a fundamental truth to all religions and belief systems -- God is love!   If that is true, and I believe it is, then our only task is to spread that love to the best of our ability.

Thank you for your wonderful and wise comments.  Your contribution to this blog is beneficial to all who read it!

      Be blessed!
